2011 Winter State Championships
02/12/11 10:45 PM
Congratulations to all the athletes who competed at today's Winter State Championship track meet in Fayetteville, NC. We had an outstanding with several athletes earning medal stand (top-4) finishes. Headlining the day was the girls' remarkable runner-up team finish, led by an individual state championship in the 1600m run from
Lauren Colberg.
The girls' team scored points in a variety of events and from a variety of athletes to take the runner-up trophy. The 4x800 relay team of Lauren Colberg, Erica Amatori, Cameron Inglis, and Mo McDonell led off the day with a 2nd place finish. Soon after, Maya Worth took 4th in the triple jump while Rayna Yvars placed 9th in the pole vault. Rayna just managed to slip over the bar at 9'6" to equal her PR. Maya tied for the 4th best jump on the day with another athlete, but won the tie-breaker by virtue of a longer 2nd-best effort than the other competitor. Efforts like these continued the rest of the day. Lauren Colberg ran in the midst of the lead pack during a very tactical 1600 race before separating on the last lap along with a Mt. Tabor runnner. Lauren was able to hold off a charge by the other runner and separate down the homestretch to take the victory and earn the 2nd female individual state champion in school history. Mo McDonnell took 2nd place in a very competitive 1000, while Lauren came back to eke out an 8th place finish in the same race and add another team point. Jessie Rossabi and Olivia Enright contributed to the point total by taking 5th and 8th places respectively in the 3200.
Going into the meet's final event, the 4x400 relay, the girls trailed Watauga by 6.25 points for the 2nd place spot. This meant that the girls had to finish 2nd or higher in the 4x400 to score the 8 points needed to earn the team runner-up trophy. Mo, Cameron, and Maya kept us competitive through the first three legs, but still found themselves in 4th place going into the anchor leg. Monica Greene ran a memorable anchor leg, passing Cary to move into 3rd and catching the Parkland anchor runner on the final stretch to eke out a 2nd place finish in the race and propel the girls' team into 2nd place in the final team standings. It was a tremendous day for the girls' track program, and the team trophy is a testament to the hard work the entire girls' program has been putting in all year.
While the boys had a small group of athletes at the meet, they nonetheless showed and competed well in their events and placed 13th as a team. Will Hulbert led the way with a runner-up finish in the pole vault competition, the highest field event finish at a state meet in the history of the boys' program. John Mangum placed 9th in the same event. Ryan Walling took the bronze in the 1600m run.
Virginia Tech Invitational
01/29/11 09:30 PM
We had a tremendous weekend at Virginia Tech with several school records, state qualifying marks, and competitive performances. This was easily one of the top Green Hope indoor track performances we have ever had, and is due in no small part to outstanding efforts from our athletes in a very high-profile meet.
For the boys, seniors Will Hulbert and Ryan Walling led the way. Will tied his outdoor PR of 13' in the pole vault, and took 5th place. Ryan continued his return to top form with an outstanding time of 4:28.81 in the invitational mile, good for 6th place.
The girls' 4x800 relay team of Mo McDonnell, Erica Amatori, Emily Boesch, and Shewit Weldense turned in a strong performance Friday night and dropped 14 seconds off our state seeding time for the event. The girls barely missed the school record in this event. Rayna Yvars achieved a new PR in the pole vault and improved her seeding height for the winter state meet. Olivia Enright later achieved a qualifying mark in the 3200 despite battling bronchitis. Saturday was a record-setting day for the girls' program. Mo took the track for the 1000m Saturday morning and destroyed the school record in that event by 12 seconds. Mo placed 5th among an extremely talented field of nationally competitive girls, and now ranks first in the state in this event and 6th all-time in North Carolina history. Cameron Inglis then took the track in the 300m and set another school record. Lauren Colberg turned in our highest placing of the weekend with a 3rd place finish in the 1600. Lauren qualified for states and set yet another school record. Finishing off the day for the girls was the 4x400 relay team, and finish off the day they did! Mo, Cameron, Monica Greene, and Maya Worth ran a blistering 4:04.63 to drop 12 seconds off the old school record. This is now the fastest girls' 4x400 in school history, indoors or outdoors. It also ranks as one of the better times in the state's indoor track history.

We saw some of the toughest competition so far this season at the tri-meet with Apex and Fuquay. Despite fielding a very young team, we are continuing to make improvements and build a strong foundation.
Alex Yozzi and Malik Forte led the way for the boys. Although Alex suffered an unfortunate injury in the pole vault he was having a great meet and equaled his PR of 11 feet, an outstanding mark for someone who has only been vaulting for a short time. Malik placed in three events to keep up a strong rookie season.
On the girls' side, Sarah Alexander and Maya Kruse both recorded individual wins in the 1600 Run and 300 Hurdles, respectively. Shewit Weldense placed 2nd in the 1600 and joined Sarah in recording regional qualifying times.

Both the boys' and girls' meets saw state powerhouse Wakefield take the win, with Green Hope in 2nd and Knightdale in 3rd. We took a very young team to the meet, many of whom competed in their first track meet. There were some outstanding performances all around, and we are off to a great start for the season.

NCHSAA 4A State Championships
05/23/09 09:00 PM
Congratulations to all the athletes who competed at the State Championship meet. The Boys' Team had a tremendous day, finishing in a tie for 3rd place with Southeast Raleigh.

In doing so they took another four seconds off their school record and ran the 4th fastest time in state history.
Zak came back to capture the 1600 gold in dramatic fashion, surging past two runners in the final 80 meters of the race for the win. Scott added a 5th place finish in the same race.
Patrick used his signature kick in the final 200 meters of the 800m Run to add a 4th place medal.
In the 3200m Run, Bryan Spreitzer ran a scorching final lap to take 4th place, just missing Zak's school record.
It was an outstanding day for the Boys' program and great finish to the high school careers of a talented group of seniors.
